i couldn't ride yesterday because i had a lot of things to do so shinya asked me to go for a ride today. i've still got a lot of things to do but who can resist such an offer on a sunny day like this?

昨日はやることが沢山あって皆と山に乗りに行けなかったから、今日乗りに行く？との木村氏の誘惑に負けて、やることは全く終わってないけど、もちろん行くことに。こんなに良い天気なのに乗らないなんてもったいない。しかも遠くへ行く訳じゃないんだもの、山はすぐ裏にある！楽しいこと優先だよ、行っちゃおうぜぃ！

the road to the lake and to the angel crest highway 2 is not yet opened but we can hike from here to the lake. it's been 10 years since they closed the access to the lake and it's almost there. happy :)

10年間閉まってた道が開通して、クリスタル・レイク（13日の金曜日の舞台になったとこ！）のすぐ近くまで行けるようになった。あともう少しで湖にもハイウェイ2番にもつながる！つながったら栗一郎の家に2番で行けるな。パスを買ってこの辺に車を停めて、徒歩ではレイクまで行けるみたい。

thursday swap meet, got some good tools, were greatly pleased, until...

いつもの木曜メッヒコ・スワップミート巡回終了。いくつか良いツールを見つけてご満悦な後ろ姿。しかし、この後ちょっとしたハプニングが待ち受けていることなど、この時点では知る術もない・・・

we found out that my 1975 plymouth duster at the parking lot wouldn't start. what a bummer! i mean, we are usually pretty tolerant with old vehicles, but today, we had to meet someone after this, etcetera, etcetera...

がび～ん、ダスターのエンジンが掛からなひ。いつもは古い乗り物に対して寛大な心で接していますが、今日に限ってこの後約束があったりして時間に制約が・・・ま、大概はその場でなんとかなることが多いので、大丈夫でしょう、ね。ね？

hummm, maybe that's it!

は、は～ん、あれだろうな。

then shinya began to walk telling me that he wanted to go to a repair shop near by and get this parts...ok, there were some repair shops not so near but we can walk there. no problem.

と、おもむろに歩き出す木村氏。聞くと、とあるパーツを手に入れたいらしい。近くに修理屋が何軒かあったから、歩いて行くつもりなんだね。近くだと思っても、歩くといつだって遠いよね。ま、いいか。

in the quest for an ignition module. it had the cheap import one when i got the car and it broke a little after. because i needed it right a way, i again got a cheap import after market one at the local parts store. it broke again and i wanted a good one but i had to order it so i temporarily got a cheap import again. and here we are. thought it was nothing special and wouldn't take much time to find it.

これこれ、このイグニッション・モジュールを探して三千里。　元々安いアフターマーケットが付いていて、すぐに壊れた。で、早急に欲しかったので、近所のパーツ屋さんで再び安物を・・・また壊れる。今度は良いものを買いたかったんだけど、オーダーしなくちゃいけなくて、すぐに必要だし取り合えずアフターマーケットの安物を付けて・・・すっかり忘れていた。よく壊れるものだから、予備をトランクに入れておこうなんて話しながら・・・すっかり忘れていた。Wタナベ氏が新婚旅行でダスター乗り回してた時に予備を持って行っていたから、もしかしてそのまま入れておいてくれたかも！もちろん、そんな気の利いたことをWタナベ氏がするわけない。なんだよ、ばーかばーか、役立たず！ということで、Wタナベ氏のせーでこんなに歩くハメに。責任転嫁じゃないよ、ホントの話。

a guy at the first repair shop said " we carry no parts like dat!" but he said some other guy down the street might have one. "how far?" "not so far!" ok, let's walk!

1軒目の修理工場のあんちゃん、「うーん、そんなパーツはないね。でも、ここ真っ直ぐ行った所ならあるかもしれないよ。」「遠いの？」「すぐそこだよ！」じゃ、歩きますか。

a guy at the second shop said they didn't carry any car parts that old. he added "nobody has any parts like that in this area, try one in irwindale." wish we could try there but we couldn't walk to irwindale. if we could, we could go back to our workshop on foot, too.

2軒目、「そんな古いパーツは扱ってないね。ま、この界隈じゃそんなの持ってるヤツはいないよ。アーウィンデールにならいるかもな。」アーウィンデールって、アズサの隣町だから。そこまで歩けるならとっくにアズサまで帰ってるし！

at this moment, i was going more towards calling up AAA but shinya asked me to find some parts shops around the area, so i did. i always respect his never give up spirit very much.

この時点で、トリプルA（JAFみたいなの）を呼ぶ方向に持っていきたい私に対して、最寄のパーツ屋を携帯で探してよ、と木村氏。木村氏の絶対諦めないスピリットに敬意を払って、トリプルAのことはまだ口に出さないことにしよっと。

of course the nearest parts store who carry what we want was　out side the walking distance. well, there were some cabs lining up in front of the swap meet entrance... aye,aye　we got on, got the parts, and came back to the swap meet.

もちろん、歩いて行ける範囲にはパーツ屋なんてない。そう言えばスワップミートの入り口の所にタクシーが並んでたけど・・・まさか・・・ね？って、乗ってるし！タクシーに待っていてもらって、パーツ屋さんでパーツ買って、再びスワップミートに戻って来た！ねばあ　ぎぶあっぷ

nope, the engine wouldn't start up...

れれ？イグニッション・モジュールじゃなかったのかな？エンジンかかんないよ！あれもこれもそれも全部Wタナベ氏のせーだ！ばーかばーか

then shinya asked a guy at the parking lot to jump start it...

駐車場にいたメッヒコのおじさんにジャンプしてもらう。こうなったら勢いでエンジンかけるつもりだよ。

nope. but i thought shinya gave of his best. so i delicately put my AAA membership card near him.

ダメだなあ。おっかしいなあ、と引き続き格闘中の木村氏。いやいや、もう充分だよ、できる限りを尽くしてくれたよ。そーっとトリプルAの会員カードを近づけてみた。恥ずかしがらずに呼ぼう、救世主レッカーを！

the guy from the towing company said "what's wrong with it? let me take a look!" you can see shinya looked very irritated. he was mumbling "just tow !"

無邪気なレッカー車のあんちゃんが、「どうしたんだよ、見てやるから前開けてみろよ！」と言ったけど、もうやれることはやったからと頑なにボンネットを開けない木村氏。しかし、あんちゃんの天真爛漫さに負け、渋々開ける。これで直っちゃったら実に気まずい雰囲気の中帰宅しなくちゃならない、頼む、余計なことをしないでおくれよ、あんちゃん！

we made it back home in one piece. we were late for the appointment but had an exciting adventure! after that, i was so exhausted and took a nap. when i woke up, shinya already had my duster fixed. it WAS the ignition module but there was also something else. thank you, shinya! you are the best!　never give up!

ふう。無事レッカーで帰宅。約束には遅れちゃったけど、楽しい冒険でした。で、疲れがドッと出て昼寝してる間にダスターが直ってた！やっぱりイグニッション・モジュールも悪かったみたいだけど、他にも悪いとこがあったんだってさ。とにかく、諦めずに最後まで直してくれてありがとう！ねばあぎぶあっぷなお話でした、めでたし。

a while ago, out of the blue, shinya tried to fix the non-op honda XL100. he got the engine running and all of a sudden he lost his interest or something and pushed it to the back row. today, suddenly he took it out. he said he wanted to do something more on the engine just for a pastime.

随分前の話だけど、突然気晴らしのためと称して不動のホンダXL100を直し始めて、案の定はまっちゃって、最後は意地でエンジン掛けるも急に熱が冷めて奥に仕舞い込んでいたヤツを、再び出してきた！またまた気晴らしなんだって。エンジンをもうちょっとやりたくなっちゃったんだってさ、急に。何だかいやぁな予感がしないでもないけど、気晴らしなんだから、ま、いいさ。

もしかして、もしかすると・・・次のバイクの登場。

i'm just guessing but i think shinya does lots of thinking during this stripping off and taking out the engine process. he loves watching the skelton and the motor. "it always motivate me," he says. he becomes very quiet, almost like he's in meditating.

こうやってバイクの骨格やエンジンが見えてくると、やる気が出てきて楽しくなってくるのだそうです。静かに作業してるけど、何か考えてるのかな。次はスポーツスター、楽しみ！

went to LA county museum to see this. free holiday monday :)

ロサンジェルス郡の美術館にコレを観に行って来ました、メトロポリスII。祭日の月曜は入場無料でワクワク度アップ。キング牧師、ありがとう！

it was truly an epitome of a metropolis...but somehow it wasn't so depressing and we didn't get frustrated at all unlike the true world. funny.

まさにメトロポリスの縮図・・・なのになぜだか憂鬱な感じがしなくて、本当の世界みたいにイライラもしない。不思議。

it was even soothing. the traffic flow was like a water flow. i could watch it forever.

むしろ癒される感じ。交通の流れが水の流れのようで、いつまでも見ていたくなる。

we were all so excited like a kid and watched it for a long time.

木村氏と写真家Zップ氏と私、大人3人で大興奮、ずーっとずーっと眺めていたのでした。完全に大人ってことを忘れちゃった。いつも忘れてるけど。

oh no...this looks so busy in the video. it really wasn't in person. it was more quiet and calm.

あれれ・・・この画像で観るとかなりワサワサしてるね。実際は全然こんな感じじゃなくて、もっと癒し系だったよ。音もちっとも気にならなかった。

ちっこいライダーIが少し大きくなって再びやって来た！

this time, he's got his brother/co-rider IG with him :)

しかも今回はもっとちっこい弟IGも一緒。

it's beautiful that little IG already shows great interest in motorcycle just like his big brother. the promising youngsters :)

お兄ちゃん同様、すでにオートバイに興味を示す弟IG。とっても良い環境で育っている兄弟、将来が楽しみ。

here at our workshop, we have no toys or anything that can entertain little kids. but these guys are just like us! sitting, touching, admiring and asking questions about motorcycles and its mechanism. we can tell that they are brought up in a favorable environment　because they're so used being around with bikes. great job, mommy and daddy :) can't wait for the day that we all can ride together and work on motorcycles together. thank you for coming, guys! you guys have made our day :)

チャボには子供が喜ぶようなものが全くないし、どちらかと言えばちびっ子には危ないものばかりあってハラハラするんだけど、このチビちゃんは私達と何ら変わりなくバイクにまたがり、あちこち触って研究したり、バイクについて質問したりして同じ時間を楽しめる。まだ会話が出来ない弟だって、手が真っ黒になっても構わずお兄ちゃんの真似をして、かなりいい線いっている。普段からオートバイに慣れ親しんでいるのがよく分かる。一緒に乗りに行ったり、いじったり出来る日がとても楽しみだな。また遊びに来てねー。

久々に寒かったけど、何だかとても楽しかった夜。主催したDン・Cリンズの人柄がよく表れていて、驚くほど沢山の人が集まっていたけど、穏やかなショウでした。

the auction wasn't the only reason why we went to vegas. actually, the main purpose was to meet up with K and to pick the "sepia" up for the maintenance check.　K can't ride the bike during the winter because of the cold weather and snow, we'll better keep the bike here in sunny california and ride it until spring comes.

オークションだけがベガスに来た理由ではありません。sepiaのオーナーKと落ち合って、点検のためにバイクを受け取るのが今回のメインイベント。Kの住んでいる場所は雪も降るし寒いので冬の間はバイクに乗れないため、出来ればカリフォルニアで乗っていて欲しいとのリクエスト。

第一回のキャノンボーラーの二人。あん時は本当に楽しかったな、最高の思い出だな、って同窓会みたいに盛り上がった。彼らは大きな問題もなく完走したから、お前達は大手術やってたもんなーってからかわれた。でも、第二回には出ないんだって。もう完璧に楽しんだからそれで終わり、だってさ。かっこいいな。

so, shinya gave a quick research on 1915 indian parts and motors before we left our workshop and the estimate prices on what we wanted in the auction catalog were quite decent. plus, we thought not so many people were seeking for a spare 1915 indian motor or parts. wishful thinking, right? but anyway, shinya decided to give it a try and bit on them. i forgot to bring my camera so those pix were taken by my cell phone camera...

一応15年のインディアンのエンジンやパーツ価格をざっと調べてきた木村氏。お目当てのパーツやエンジンの予想落札価格をオークション・カタログで見ると、え？思いっきり予想を下回り、手に届く数字！そしてもちろん、頭の中はスーパー自分勝手な予測でいっぱい。15年のインディアンのパーツとかエンジンをスペアで欲しいと思ってる人なんてそうそう居るわけない。値段が思いのほか安い上に欲しい人もいないとなれば、オークションに参加しない手はない。あ、他に欲しい人がいるはずないんだから、競らなくても手に入るんじゃない？と木村氏。こんなポジティブ（スットコドッコイ）な人、いるでしょうか。ま、そういう流れで、木村氏本物のオークション・デビューです。カメラ持っていくの忘れたので、携帯のカメラで撮った写真。

before shinya bid on the things he really wanted, he said he needed to practice. he found a couple of photographs that he once tried to purchase at the art show but couldn't make his mind and missed the opportunity. so, since the estimated price were super reasonable, he decided to bit on those photographs.

しかし何しろ初オークション、練習が必要だと言い出す木村氏。以前買いたかったけど迷い過ぎて買えなかった写真を発見、しかも予想落札価格が迷った時の1/3くらいだったので、これを練習で競り入れしてみることに。ドッキドキ。

timidly shinya raised his number card. there was another woman who raised her hand after him but shinya called and raised 10. he usually ask for 10-dollar discount at swap meets so this was very brave of him. he won both. they were in the estimated price range, 1/3 of the price he expected. ok, that was easy!

恐る恐る自分の番号札を上げる木村氏。他に競る人はいない・・・と、前方の女性が番号札を上げた！まずい・・・どうするんだ？なんと、思い切った行動に出る木村氏、10ドル値段を上げた！いつもはスワップミートで10ドル値段を下げることに集中しているのに！前方の女性はすぐに諦めてしまい、写真を両方獲得した木村氏。予想落札価格内、自分の予想よりもかなり低めで終了。なーんだ、簡単じゃん！

now memorabilia section was done and the auction was getting into the vintage indian parts...but the situation had taken a dark side. contrary to our naive expectations, many people were interested in old indain parts :) when we saw just a timing cover alone went more than shinya's budget for the whole engine, shinya was already surrendered. i said to him "aren't those people seeking for some parts already got their motors? so maybe they're not interested in the motor itself?" "well, i've already got a good motor but seeking for another one, don't you see?" shinya replied...so we kinda gave up and just enjoyed the show. these two 1915 indian motors that shinya wanted, the prices didn't go so crazy and if you really wanted it, you'd be happy with it. we weren't so serious and our budget was incredibly low. that's all. time to go back to the swap meets :)

オモチャや記念グッズなどのコーナーが終わり、いよいよビンテージ・インディアンのパーツコーナーに突入。しかし、雲行きが怪しい。木村氏の都合の良い予測に反して、10年代のインディアンのパーツを狙っている人が山のようにいる。（当たり前なんだけど）オークションは白熱し、値はどんどん上がってゆく。ついにタイミングカバー単品が、木村氏のエンジン丸ごとの予算を上回ってしまう。狙ってるエンジンにもタイミングカバーが付いてるんだから、エンジンの値段の想像はつく。完璧に諦めモードに入る木村氏。しかし、ここでパーツを競っていると言うことは、すでにエンジンを持っているということなんだから、この人達はきっとエンジン自体には興味がないんじゃないか？と聞くと、「あのさ、俺だって大陸横断できるくらいいいエンジン持ってるんだよ。なのに、スペア用を探してるんだよ。分かるでしょ？」と半切れ。そりゃそうだ。ま、どうしても手に入れなくちゃならないものでもないし、買えなくてもいいか。結果、狙っていたエンジンは両方そんなにクレイジーな値は付かなかったけど、勿論私達の予算を大幅に上回り、番号札を上げるまでもなく諦めました。本当に欲しければお買い得な値段だと思うけど、スワップミートやスリフトで鍛えられた我々には、値を下げるんじゃなくて上げる、という行為自体、向いていないみたいです。

so, shinya came here for the spare indian motor and some parts, ended up with two great photographs which is great. we reunited with many cannonballers and good friends. that's the great part.

さて、インディアンのエンジンやパーツを求めてラスベガスのオークションまでやって来たというのに、なぜか2枚の素敵な写真を手に入れた木村氏。でもこのオークション来てよかった。沢山の大好きな友達やキャノンボーラー達に会えて、素敵なバイクをいっぱい見れて、眼の保養にもなったし。

shinya received a package from his friend in japan today. inside was his camera he left in japan. it's an early model werra! i've never seen this one in person.

日本から荷物が届いた本日。中から木村氏が日本で持っていたカメラが。これは旧東ドイツ製のべェラというものらしいですよ。初期型。

it was made by carl-zeiss jena lens factory from 1954,55 in old east germany. this camera was a gift from a good friend of shinya.

旧東ドイツのカール・ツアイス・イエナのレンズファクトリーで作られ、1954年くらいから発売されていたものだそうです。こんなカメラ見たことない！というより、どんだけマニアなんだ、木村氏！やっぱり・・・実は頂き物だと白状しました・・・だよねー

have seen this bus around, here and there, for quite some time. not sure what it is, looks like a camper, but it creates this distinctive magical atmosphere. i can't feel it from these pictures but every time when we pass by the bus, we get the willies...there's always a guy in the bus but not today. just a dog...

このへんてこなバス、ここ数年アズサのあちこちで見る。写真で見るとそうでもないけど、独特の雰囲気を醸し出していて、そばを通ると不気味・・・大体いつもおじさんが乗っているので、中をジロジロ見れないんだけど、今日は犬しか乗っていなかったので軽く覗いてみたら、立派なキッチンが見えた。もう少し見たい衝動に駆られたけれど、これ以上見ていたら突然ドアが開いて中に連れ込まれそうな気配に恐れをなして、足早に立ち去った。スリル満点。普通にキャンパーなんだろうけど、中に色んな動物がいたり、魔術師が乗っていたりするんだとこれからも信じていようと思う。

in my eyes, modern motorcycles has spaghetti wiring but shinya says he　enjoy doing wire on both old and modern motos. it's more like solving puzzles for him though i can beat him in tetris. he keeps making a wrong move :D　anyway, the pain is finding the right places to hide bunches of those wires.

素人の私から見ますと、オートバイが新しければ新しいほど配線がより複雑で大変なように感じますが、木村氏はオートバイが新しくても旧くても、割と配線が好きなんですって。配線するのはいいけど、モダンバイクの配線の山を上手い具合に隠すのが悩みの種。

水曜の夜から同じTシャツを着続けて30時間の木村氏、これはたった今、金曜の午前3時に撮った写真でございます。どんだけぺリッチTシャツを気に入っているのか。良く言えば、他の事はどうでもよくなっちゃう位ツインカムの配線に集中しているということか。しかし、日中30℃以上あった昨日、「冬だから全然汗かかない」説も使えませんよ！ま、集中している人にTシャツ替えろなんてちっさいこと、言わなくていいよね。学生服だって毎日同じの着てるもの。こんな時裸族だったら楽チンなのに。裸で溶接・・・萌え・・・づらい。

yes, finally it's done! we'd been planning to self publish uncompromising Zap's photo book　for about 4 years or more.

構想4年以上、妥協せずに思う存分目一杯　”Zap　Teshima”　な写真集を作りたいという思いがやっと形に・・・

shinya has always loved the bold composition and balance find in ukiyoe. when he was still in japan, he tried to take photos of motorcycles he built with clear implications for the composition in ukiyoe but "never had success," he said.

when shinya first saw some photographs taken by Zap 7,8 years ago in japan, he said it blew his mind. the dynamic composition, the balance as a whole, the color, the silence yet you can feel a bounding pulse from Zap's photographs...it was sensation, shinya recalls. he could meet Zap but hadn't ask him to take photos of his motorcycles or anything. instead, shinya told Zap how much he loved and enjoyed his photos and just secretly aspired to get him to take one of shinya's motorcycles one day.

浮世絵に見られる構図やそのバランスに深く感銘を受ける木村氏、日本に居た頃には完成したバイクの写真を、恥ずかしながら（本人談）自分で浮世絵の構図を意識して撮ったりしていたそうですが、上手くいったためしがなかったらしい。

そんな木村氏が7,8年前にZap氏の写真を初めて目にした時、自分では撮る術もなかった大胆な構図、全体のバランス、色使い、躍動感、すべての要素がその写真１枚１枚に詰め込まれているのを感じて、とても興奮したのを今でもはっきりと覚えているそう。その時ちょうど来日中だった本人にも会えたのだけれど、ただ写真が好きだと伝えただけで、いつか自分のバイクの写真を撮ってもらえる日がくればいいなあ、となぜか密かに思いを馳せるに留まった。Zap氏の人と成りがずいぶんと分かってきた今思うと、ここで木村氏が気軽に「今度僕のバイクの写真、撮ってくださいよお」なんて言っていたら、一生撮ってもらえなかったのではないかと思う。へそ曲がり同士だからよかったのだろう。

when i first saw Zap's photographs, i felt quietness. at the same time, i could hear the sound of a hot rod engine or a wind and then a story or a poetry or even melodies in a minor key pops up in my mind just like watching movies. i could appreciate my own imaginations on and on through his photos. it's not at all aggressive but i could still feel Zap's sharpness in his soft photos. or i should say his passion(zap!)instead of using the word sharpness...

私が初めてZap氏の写真を見た時に感じたのは、静寂。ところが不思議なことに、しーんとした中にホットロッドのエンジンの音や風の音が、ストーリーや詩となって聞こえてくる。マイナーコードのメロディーさえもどこかで鳴っている。まるで映画を観ているような気持ちになれる。写真を見ている間中ずっと、自分の想像力がmaxに働いて、写真に切り取られた一瞬の前後の情景までもが浮かんでしまう感覚。写真は穏やかでひとつも攻撃的じゃないけれど、どこかにZap氏の鋭さや情熱、それこそZAPを感じる。

anyway, shinya reunited with Zap when he relocated to california in 2006. Zap started to stop by our workshop on a whim sometimes with his camera sometimes without. one time he asked us out to go to see the land speed race at the dry lake in el mirage. we took the needle (was the only bike we had at that time) to just to try ride around on the lake bed. while shinya was having fun on the needle zap was shooting photos of shinya　on needle. we spent whole day and a night in nature with countless speed junkies. about a week later, zap came back with bunches of breathtaking photos he took in el mirage. i think, without a word, it was the beginning of our long journey together.

そうこうしている間に木村氏がアメリカに移住、Zap氏に再会。それからはZap氏がフラリとチャボに寄ってくれるようになり・・・ある時、エルミラージのランドスピードレースを絶対観た方がいいよ、と誘ってくれた。折角だからドライレークを走ってみようという話になって、当時チャボにあった唯一のバイク、ニードルを持って干上がった湖へと出かける。大自然の迫力と、こんな所でスピードを競って遊んでいる大人たちがいるという事実に大興奮したのはもちろん、ニードルに乗りまくってすっかりランドスピードレースに参戦する気になる木村氏と、その姿を日が暮れるまでひたすら撮るZap氏。夜はドライレークでキャンプして、早朝からまた乗って撮って、もう私達は完璧にエルミラージに魅了されてしまう。しばらくしてその時の写真を持ってZapがチャボに来てくれた。写真をみたあの瞬間、私達の中で何かが芽生え、この長い旅が始まったような気がする。

ever since that day, Zap, shinya and i have started going somewhere new and taking photos every time when a new bike is done. we didn't even think about making a photo book back then but we somehow felt an urge to do the shooting.

after a while, we realized we had quite a lot of photographs and Zap made them into a book to make us easier to go through them. we loved the idea and then started thinking about self publish them.

at end of each year, we had a secret meeting　and said "we take some more photos early next year and make a photo book by the end of the next year." for two years. it sounded like a cantrip in the third year. and last year we finally decided to stop adding to the sample book and just make it come true. finding a great printer was a trouble but by the help of our friend, we found a reliable printer specialized in black and white in japan.　it was right after we found the printer, the disaster hit japan. we did a lot of thinking and our decision was... go for it. we never know what's gonna happen to us tomorrow so we better stop deferring action. i personally felt a powerful urge to give a shape to these metal genius and visual art genius' work in one.

その日以来、新しいバイクが出来上がる度に、私達はどこか新しい場所を探し写真を撮る旅に出る。近かったり遠かったり。でもいつも旅のような気がする。最初は写真集を作ろうなんて考えてもいなかったし、ただ無我夢中だっただけなんじゃないかな。木村氏は出来立てのバイクを存分に味わい、その姿を半ば何かに取り憑かれたかのように撮りまくるZap氏。

気がつけば撮りためた写真が相当な数になり、見やすいようにとZap氏が一冊にまとめてくれたのをきっかけに、これを写真集にしようという気持ちが高まる。しかし、毎年末チャボに集まってはグダグダと、「もう少しだけ撮ったら来年末には絶対に本にしようと」と言い続けて数年経ち、3年目くらいには合言葉か呪文のようにさえ聞こえてきた、「来年末には本に・・・」。別に気がなかった訳ではない。むしろ、作るんだったら妥協しないで本当に良いものを作ろう、と気合が入りすぎて「いんや、まだまだ！」とストイックになり過ぎちゃった感も否めない。でも、ついに去年、きりが無いからこれ以上新しい写真を見本に付け足すのをやめて、一旦まとめよう、と決断。納得できる結果を出してくれる印刷所がなかなか見つからなかったけど、知人の紹介で日本で刷ることに決定。いよいよ、という時に震災があった。色々なことを考えた。でも、やりたいことがあるなら、今やらなくちゃ。Zap氏の眼から見た木村氏の作品、これは絶対に形にしなくちゃいけない。出来ることを先延ばしにするなんてナンセンスだ。そう思った。だから決行した。

木村氏曰く、「置いておくだけでは伝えられない自分の作ったバイクの魅力を、ZapがZapのフィルターを通して引き出してくれた。」だから、文字は一切なし。説明もなし。Zapの写真を通して自由に想像して好きに感じてもらえたら嬉しい。

"i think an unmoving motorcycle has only half as much appeal as the one on the road. but i'm lucky that Zap had captured the moving moments of my motorcycles in his photos and it would be my honor if you, too, could feel the other half, the true characters of the motorcycles i built through his photographs." shinya said.

we usually stay around here but decided to follow a trail just a little bit further today.

いつもは入り口の所までバイクで来てのんびりして帰るのだけど、トレイルをもう少し奥まで歩いてみることに・・・

思っていたよりも山深い・・・軽装で富士山登っちゃってプチ遭難して大迷惑というニュースが脳裏をよぎる。まずい、チョコレートも持っていないよぉぉぉ・・・虚しくコダマするばかり。

now i can say for sure that the only person who will look good on this bike will be the owner. it happens every time. and every time i recall shinya's words: "if there is just one person besides me, feels a powerful pull and satisfies with my finished work then i'm happy. and that person should be the owner of the bike and if that person looks good on it and enjoys it, my mission is mostly completed. then i will get my mind off of everything and move on to the next one."

he said his mission was MOSTLY completed, not FULLY　completed because he gives a lifetime warranty on all motorcycles he builds...well, of course it's shinya's lifetime, maybe everlasting... :)

oh, and in regard to this twin-cam, it's not done yet. he's still working on it. i just wanted to share the up to the minute look because it looks...super radical.

いよいよ大詰めとなりました、ツインカムの現在の姿。このバイクが似合う人は一人しかいない、そう思えちゃいます。毎回そうなんですが、その一番似合う人のために似合うバイクを作るのが木村氏の仕事。前に木村氏が誰かに聞かれて答えていたことを改めて思い出します。「常に自分が好きなバイクを作っているけど、自分だけが満足するだけならただの自己満足になっちゃう。だけど、もし100人ひとが居たとして、その全員に好かれるバイクを作るつもりもない。99人がノーと言ってもオーナー1人が強烈に惹かれればそれでいい。オーナーが乗って格好良くて、さらに楽しんでもらえれば自分の仕事はほとんど終わり。後は全部忘れて、次のバイクに進むだけ。ま、どうせなんでもすぐに忘れちゃうけど・・・」

バイクが出来上がっても付き合いは一生続く。現在木村氏が製作したバイクには永久保障をつけているから。作った以上、自分が生きていて身体が動く間は、面倒を見続けたい。長年考えてはいたけれど、なかなか実現できなかったことのようです。でも、「早死にしたらごめんなさい」だって・・・

but they are both with us now :) and i wish the dog was here with us. i miss our dog so much...

こっちはやけに素朴だけど、元野良猫。犬とは仲良しだったけど、捨て猫ちゃんとは仲がよろしくない。野良猫も捨て猫も両方レスキューしました。

で、チャボで箱好きなのは木村氏だけじゃないって言いたかったんだけど・・・やっちゃったよ、禁断の動物ネタ・・・ま、いいや。これでアノ犬（元野良、保健所出身）も生きていたら最高なのにな。皆長生きしてほしいな。

usually it's in square cans or even in plastic bottles nowadays, but round cans? maybe new old stock? i don't know but every time shinya stops by this harware store, he finds something interesting other than what he's looking for :)

近所の小さいハードウェア屋にて本日木村氏が見つけたもの、筒型缶入りミステリーオイル。よく見るのは四角い缶だし、最近じゃプラスティックのボトルになっちゃったから、古いのかも。とにかく、ここの小さいハードウェア屋は、行く度に何かしらのデッドストックを発見できる。しかも値札も当時ものだったりして、おじいちゃんが首を傾げながらそのままの数字をレジに打つ。稀に頭が冴えていて、「これは昔の値段じゃ！」と言って、その場で少しだけ値上げしたりする時もある。大きなチェーン店とは違って現行のものは大体割高だけど、色々発見があってこういうローカルのお店って好きだな。

also, designer T-san stopped by so we all had a little early impromptu holiday gathering at chabott corner bar :) recently T-san was in japan and he brought back very popular castella cake for us. castella was brought in to japan by portuguese merchants in 16th century and has been refined and loved by japanese people ever since.

偶然、日本が大好きなデザイナーのTィム氏もチャボに寄ってくれたので、チャボ奥の間が賑わった夜でした。皆さんお引止めしてしまってすみませぬ。最近日本に行っていたTィム氏、お土産に文明堂のカステーラを持って来てくれたりするところが、実に日本人的なアメリカ人です。ありがとう。

but our 1915 indian has a history, we are very confident about it. new york to san francisco, the cooler weather should be advantage for the indian. next year, it's not pre-1916 anymore. it's pre-1930. many people are taking 20's motorcycles but we want to take our indian again. as i said, we have a history together. yeah, we can make it all stages...hopefully :)

来年のキャノンボールに向けて準備開始。前回のように、4ヶ月しか準備期間がなかった、などという言い訳ももう出来ないし。今回は北の方のルートなので、すぐに熱くなっちゃうインディアンには有利かも。前回は1915年までのオートバイのみでしたが、今回は1929年まで。で、参加者リストみたら、20年代の人ばっかり。前回ティーンズで参加していた人達も、結構20年代に乗り換えちゃってるよ・・・いやー我々はチョイスがありませんので、引き続き1915年のインディアンで全ステージ制覇？目指しちゃう？ま、あのお二人なら、見た目は暢気ですがやる時はやってくれるでしょう、楽しみです。私もチャボバンで再び大陸横断往復、狙っていきますぜ。

やっとチャボバンが見えてきたよ、お、重ひ・・・の図。つか、アウェイのフリマなのにバンで乗り付けるあたり、木村氏の気合がにじみ出ちゃってますな。そういう時にかぎって収穫はこの箱のみ。前回ここで大きな作業台を見つけたからって、気合入れすぎはいけませんよ。

shinya is not choosing color for the twin-cam. he's so certain about what color he wants but it's not black nor brown, and it's not red either. it's not just a color, it's also a texture. he's been trying a couple new ways to get what he wants but none of them gave him satisfaction. last night, a little after midnight, he finally found a way, almost by accident, to get as close to the color as he wants. i'll post some pictures and explain little bit more when it's done. at the same time he was struggling with the color experiment, he also worked on the brakes and wiring to be ready to ride it finally!

色です。ツインカムを何色にしようか迷っているのではなく、こういう色というのが木村氏の中ではっきりあるようです。でも、それは例えば黒、茶色、赤とかではない。だから、この色で塗る、という話ではないようです。塗料のサンプルの中から色を選ぶのではなく、バイクの造形と乗り手のイメージ、それから質感や素材を生かした色を出す。塗るというより、出す感じ。いくつか新しい試みにチャレンジしていますが、待たされるばかりでどれも木村氏の求めている色を出せない。昨晩、真夜中。ほとんど偶然にその”色”を自力で見つけた木村氏。執念とでも言いますか。妥協しないで自分の内にあるものを目に見えるものにする、というのは大変な作業ですね。見ているだけの私の方が、じーんとしてしまいました。完成したらもう少し詳しく写真と一緒に載せたいと思います。色と闘ってる間にも、ブレーキやワイヤリングの作業を進めて、いよいよラストスパートです。

I was here in town so he stopped by our workshop with his dad. I builds custom bicycle frames by hand in boston.

ボストンでハンドメイドの自転車のカスタムフレームを作っているIが、カリフォルニアに住んでいるお父さんと一緒にチャボに来てくれた。

this was his first one when he started. "it's not so good," he said but we knew this meant a lot to him. and he gave it to shinya. we are very lucky to meet someone like him, doing something he loves with passion. I, thank you for coming and hope to see you again soon. keep up the great work!

これは一番最初に彼がフレーム作りを始めた時の第一号。「すごい下手くそだけど・・・」と言っていたけど、本人にとってとても意味のある大切なものだと思う。それを木村氏にくれた。自分の好きなことを精一杯やっている彼は、これからもずっと成長し続けていくんだと思う。だから、この第一号、チャボで大切に預かっておきます。いつかまた、最初の一号を見たくなったらいつでも言ってね、ありがとう。

here was our plan for sunday. get up early and ride to david mann show. come back early and stop by at long beach motorcycle show to say hello to a friend. turns out shinya was very jetlagged, up until 3am and overslept. so we missed the david mann and just went to long beach.

昨晩、絶対に遂行できない無謀な計画を立てる。まずは超早起き。この辺からもう怪しい。そして早朝からバイクでヴェンチュラのdavid mannのショーに行く。早めに戻ってきて、ロングビーチのモーターサイクルショウに来ている知り合いに会に行く、というもの。もちろん、重度の時差ぼけ中の木村氏は夜中までゴソゴソやっていたらしく、早起きなんてムリムリ。なので今年もdavid mannは行けず。とりあえず午後からロングビーチに出向く。バイクで出かけたけど、あまりの寒さに途中で引き返しダスターで。ことごとく計画倒れな一日、爽快です。とにかく先入観を捨て、苦手系のコンベンションセンターへ。

チャボにコロボックルがやって来た！コビトのおじさんがタイヤラックを片付けたり、日本に行く前に個人売買で手に入れた機械を、これまた個人売買で手に入れたスタンドに設置してくれたりしたよ。

mooneyes X'mas party at irwindale speedway...

irwindale speedway is just 10 minutes from our workshop but every year, on the day of mooneyes x'mas party, the entrance becomes chaos and there's always a long line so we usually take one motorcycle so that we don't have to wait in line, the motorcycle parking area is cool.

毎年チャボから10分の所にあるスピードウェイで開催されるムーンのクリスマスパーリー、朝から午後まで入り口が大渋滞になるので、いつもバイクで行きます。バイクのパーキングは空いていて、ラインに並ばなくても入れるのがよろしい。

「コノ、ブルターコハ、ワタシタチ、キョーダイガ、ツクリマーシタ」リノからやって来たBusch兄弟。ボンネビルでチャボのピットまで遊びに来てくれた二人。お兄ちゃん（多分）のウェストの高さが気になるう。
