give cortina lots of love...

recently shinya was busy working on my duster and the van, it's time to work on his cortina! it's been hacking and coughing for a while.

最近ダスターやチャボ・バンにばかり手が掛かってしまい、ご自分のコルチーナがゴボついているのを聞いて聞こえぬ振りをしていた木村氏。ついに思い腰を上げた！

 finally changed the exhaust gasket. now it runs super smooth! this is not a hobby it's a necessity...

破けていたエギゾースト・ガスケットを取り替えた。ゴボつきが嘘のように無くなった！これは趣味ではなく必要に迫られて・・・だそうです。

the only difference is...

 "since it started to rain, i'll be a hobbyist today." shinya told me twice. a hobbyist? what did he mean by hobbyist? work on XL100 again? i wondered.

「あー雨降ってきちゃったからさ、今日は趣味に没頭したいと思います。」と突然発表する木村氏。「えーこれから趣味の時間でぇす。」え？２回も宣言した！なになに、趣味って？またXL100いじるんでしょ？

shinya: "well, it's kinda your hobby, too."

木村氏　「あ、ちょっとメナシングアユさんの趣味とも言えるんだけど」

me: "it's my hobby, too?"

私　「え、私の趣味でもあるの？」

shinya: "ahh, maybe not your hobby but it's kinda your bike, you know?"

木村氏　「いや、あのう、メナシングさんの趣味というよりは、メナシングさんのバイクっていうか・・・」

me: "you need my bike for your hobby????"

私　「ん？私のバイクが趣味の時間に関係あるの？？？」

and i found that he already had something in his mind and put a huge mark on the rear section on my yamaha XT500.

見たらすでにyamaha XT500に何か切り取り線みたいなのが書いてある！

me: "ok, i didn't know you were interested in my XT but whatever. you didn't have to give out..."

私　「別にいいけど・・・わざわざ趣味の時間です宣言しなくても・・・」

shinya: "ah, because it's hard to tell the difference between my hobby and the work. i just wanted to let you know that i'm in my hobby time."

木村氏　「いや、ちょっと仕事なのか趣味なのか区別が付きにくいから、一応趣味の時間だってことをお知らせしておこうかなと思ってさ。」

me:"oh..."

私　「なんじゃそりゃー」
  

and then he put a suzuki tank that he found at a swap meet long time ago and the seat cowl that he made for his GS1000 on the XT...it was nice but wasn't what he wanted.

いきなり切り取り線は無視して、チャボに転がっていたスズキのタンクと木村氏が以前自身のGS1000用に作ったシートカウルを装着させてみる。なかなか良いではないですか！しかし、シートカウルがやっぱり気に入らないらしい。

yup. shinya was right. it's definitely hard to tell if it's his hobby time or his work time.

なるへそ。確かに趣味の時間なのか仕事中なのか全く区別がつかない。やってること同じです。

マンヨウ（満足溶接）中

the only difference i could find was that shinya was pretty relaxed, drinking coffee in between his tasks which he wouldn't do if he was working. well, the process is basically the same only he didn't spend much time because it was very casual and simple seat cowl compare to his usual creations.

唯一の違いは、同じ作業をしていても実はリラックスしてるという点。作業の真っ只中にコーフィーを飲む姿、仕事中は見たことがない。これは趣味の時間ならではでしょう。もちろん、仕事と違って趣味にはそんなに時間をかけたり凝ったことはしないという違いはありますが。

 wow! i love my new XT though i liked my old one very much. i love his hobby :D　shinya said hobby time was very important for him even if it looked like he was doing the same thing.　i said to him, "you really enjoy making something, don't you?" and you know what he said? he said "no, i just love to see the shapes that i like and i have to make it in order to see them, that's all."
 

出来た！何て素敵なんざんしょ。本人曰く、「趣味の時間はとても大切」だそうです。仕事との違いは目には見えないけど、気持ち的に何かあるのでしょうね、たとえやっていることは全く同じでも。うーん、どんだけ作るの好きなんだろう・・・って言ったら、作るのが好きというよりは、カッコイイ形を見るのが好きなんだって。見たい一心で作ってるのだそう。どっちにしても、カッコいいXTが一台、出来上がり。前のも好きだったけど、今度のも最高！木村氏の趣味の時間、バンザーイ！

山から戻って来て、born free 4とloser machine co.の集まりへ顔を出しに都会へ。
 

 SD's '29 JD! he'll be participating in the next cannonball with this beauty :)

急遽今年のキャノンボールに参加することになったSDが、最近エンジンが掛かったばかりの29年式のJDで来ていた。

now SD said he'd take everything a part and rebuild/restore/repair or do whatever he could do before the cannonball to be ready. we totally understand. a sense of urgency welled up in shinya... ;D

やっとエンジンが掛かったってことは、ここからが始まり。SDもこれから全部バラして直せるもの、改善できるところをキャノンボールまでに徹底的にやると言っていた。オー何だか焦ってきたぜい。

canyon surf, pleasure ride...

perfect weather for a canyon ride! shinya and i enjoy riding by ourselves but riding with kindred spirits is a pleasure. we're alone while riding but we can share the same path and talk about it later.

気の合う仲間と山に乗りに行くには最高のお天気。オートバイは一人で乗っても楽しいし、どうせ乗っている間は一人だし、それが何とも贅沢な時間でもある。でも、あそこのカーブ怖かったとか、落石半端ないねーとか、同じ道を走って来た人にしか分からないモノを共有できるって最高！
 

 oh my, Naki got hit by mv agusta! nah. he was just taking photos. Naki of Naki surf is a pro surfer, writer, photographer, free man and son of the ocean.

あ！Naki氏がアグスタに轢かれた！今回初めてお会いしたとは思えないプロ・サーファーNaki氏は、フォトグラファーでもあり、ライターでもあり、Naki surfの代表で、自由人・・・早い話サン・オブ・オーシャンなのでR。

 O still kicking...he wasn't able to start the SR just yet. he likes kawasaki, that's why!

力が入り過ぎてどうしてもキックが掛からないOカワラ氏、ここでまさかの派閥問題が浮き彫りに。ボクはカワサキ派、ボクはカワサキ派、ボクはカワサキ派・・・どりゃーヤマハ派の前で何てことを！もう絶対に掛からないよ、機嫌を損ねたヤマハはもう意地でも掛かんないさ。カワサキ派には無理なのさ！
 

 K tries to ride on SR. she said it had been a while since the last time she rode a motorcycle. guys are always nice　and helpful to a pretty girl :)

 even Naki had a great time on SR! he hadn't ridden a motorcycle for 28 years though he rides the wave every day :)

ほらほら～28年振りにオートバイに乗ったとおっしゃるNaki氏だってこの笑顔！何派？ヤマハ派。しかも、すんなりキックdeスタート。力んじゃダメ、これは全てのことに共通するのかも。

Shinya and Naki passed each other in a couple of occasions before but never had a chance to meet until today through the introduction of a someone very special. such a great encounter. they all brought us a super positive vibes. Naki is also a very unique photographer. check out his blog, he's got some cool photos of mv agusta, our workshop and other great photos. :)

Naki氏と木村氏。海と陸が出会った瞬間。以前に何度か同じ場所に居たのにすれ違ってばかりで、今回満を持してお会いすることが出来ました。とてもユニークで素敵な波長をお持ちの方で、会うべくして会ってしまった、そんな感じがいたします。何より引き合わせてくださった謎のX氏に感謝。全ては縁、大切にしたいです。楽しかった時間が終わってしまうのが少し名残惜しい、そんな土曜の夕方、ありがとうマンライ。海でも山でもモーターサイクリングでもサーフィングでも、すっごく好きとことん好き何より好きというものを持っている、そういう方々は本当に魅力的です。Naki氏のカッコイイ写真と粋な文章はhere。

次に山に行く時のための下見で山へ行く。昨晩遅くまでチャボ・バンいじったのでご褒美に山へ行く。と、名目は何でもよいのです、とにかく山へオートバイを乗りに行こう！
 

 refreshing! and shinya's XL100 got IT now.

嗚呼、爽快！で、ついに木村氏の小さいバイクXL100、ビシッとアレが出たらしい。一体何が出てるのか分からないけど、確かに今まででいちばん速かった！

 something is not right about the new face, not the paint...oh, the bumper!

同じ顔なんだけど、何かが違う。鼻先の色の違いだけじゃなくて、何かが・・・あ！バンパーだ！

これこれ。こーじゃなくっちゃ！って、誰も気にしないと思うけど、我々にとっては結構意味があるのでR 。

 the old van had a darker blinker

元祖チャボ・バンのブリンカーの色が濃い。

 new van had a faded blinker, so i traded them.

新・チャボ・バンのは薄い・・・のでトレードした。

 the old van has better tyres...

タイヤも元祖チャボ・バンの方が良いので、替える。

and the door! the new van has really good doors but we wanted to swap at least one door. keeping the spare tyre out side is a good idea to make more space inside, so we replaced the left door.

そしてドア！これはどっからどう見たって新・チャボ・バンの方がピシッとしていますが、元祖のドアには色々な想いが詰まっていますから、せめて、せめて1枚だけでも・・・取り替えます。

 now you can't tell which van is which.　we got confused when we were working on them. what are we doing? which van are we keeping? are we gonna put this on this one or that one, etc.

こうなってくるともうどっちが元祖でどっちが新・チャボだか分からない。作業中にも何やってるのか、どっちから何を取ったのか、全然分かんなくなる。でも、くじけない！というか、結局どっちに乗るんだったかしら？

 removed some stickers from the old door using heat gun...guess i'm not a good heat gun shot...

ヒートガンを駆使して元祖ドアから大事なシール剥がして新・ドアに移植。貴重なシールがことごとくガキガキに。

 sorry Makoto...please bring some stickers next time you come.

Mコト氏のシールに至っては折角二枚貼ってあったのに両方粘着力を失ってしもた・・・ヒートガンめ！今度アメリカにいらっしゃる時に新しいシールを譲ってくださいませ～
