today of all days, the starting point was some distance away.

今日に限ってスタート地点が宿から離れている。

 

every time the engine stopped or stalled niimie had to push. we can't even get to the starting point?

途中で何度も止まるインディアン。止まる度に押し掛けする。スタート地点にもたどり着けないのか？！

however, he managed to get to the starting line and started! the cruise speed dropped extremely...

しかし執念でスタート地点までたどり着き、そのままスタート！速度は全く出なくなっている。かまうもんか！行くしかない！

laugh or cry this would be the last day to work on the indian at the parking lot...

right after we got here at the hotel for tonight, shinya and niimie started to work on the indian. on the way to get here they diagnosed from symptoms that niimie experienced this morning. the magneto!

今日の宿に着くや否や、インディアンを降ろし作業し始める木村氏とN美氏。移動中のバンであれやこれや症状から原因を探り、マグニートではないかと診断。
 

remember right before we leave our workshop, shinya and niimie took out the mag from the excelsior just in case? they need to modify it a bit but it's always good to have a spare.

覚えていますか？出がけにもしかしたらと思いついて、チャボのエクセルシアからマグニートを慌てて外していた木村氏とN美氏を。あの時面倒がらずに外して持ってきておいて良かった！

they did as best they could to make the indian running again and managed to ride to the today's finish line to get the course direction for tomorrow.

何とか走れるようになったインディアンで、本日のゴール地点に向かう。コースマスターに明日の地図をもらわねば。

it's not done yet. to cross the golden gate bridge and make it to the grand finish tomorrow, they still need to work on so many things. they said they didn't mind working on it, it was what they've doing for last 16 days, but they kinda knew that it would be tough for the indian and tough for them to whip her. oh well, we've gotta do what we can do...

これで終わり・・・ではない。明日ゴールデンゲート・ブリッジを渡り、走ってゴールする為にはまだまだやることがある。この１６日間ずーっとやってきたことだし、やらなければ走れないならやるしかない。ただ、今のインディアンにとって相当に厳しいことも分かっている。弱っているインディアンに鞭打つのが辛い。でも泣いても笑ってもこうやって外の駐車場で（ホテルの部屋でも）インディアンをいじるのは今日が最後。やれるだけのことはやって、何とか走ってゴールしよう。帰ったら全部直して楽にしてあげよう。

i can prove that they did their best. i was there watching the whole time. tomorrow's the last day.

彼らが今出来るベストを尽くしたことは分かっている。明日はいよいよ最終日。

found niimie at the 10-mile mark...

we got a call from niimie a little later he left. he said that the indian stopped and he tried everything he could at the side of the road but no luck and wanted us to pick him up.

N美氏が出発して間もなく電話があり、10マイル地点でインディアンがまたもや止まってしまった模様。ハイウェイ脇で出来る限りを尽くしたがダメそうなのでピックアップしてほしい、とのこと。慌てて駆けつける。

when we got there the sweep truck was already behind him but niimie told us to wait because he wanted to try one more thing. shinya anxiously observing niimie. no luck. the official sweeper said we could haul our indian ourselves so that we could get to the stopping point faster and work on it.

すでにオフィシャルのスウィープ・トラックがN美氏の後ろに来ていた。N美氏があと一つだけ試したいことがあるから待ってくれと言うのを心配そうに見守る木村氏。諦めずに色々試したN美氏はここでは何も出来ないと判断、明日走ってゴール出来るよう今日は直すと気持ちを切り替え、インディアンを積むことに。オフィシャルが自分達で積んで先に今日のゴール地点へ行って早く直せよ、と言ってくれたので、チャボバンで移動。インディアンに乗れるのは今日が最後のN美氏に気持ち良く乗せてあげられなかった事を悔やむ木村氏（私も同じ気持ちで一杯）、そして本当に本当のギリギリなインディアン。一体どうなるのか！？

we have no choice but to continue...

shinya and niimie decided to continue if it at all was possible. they'll try to make the indian going for two more days to cross the golden gate bridge.

しかし、ここで諦める訳にはいかない。何とかあと二日、ここまで頑張ってきたインディアンにゴールデンゲート・ブリッジを渡らしてやりたい。走ってゴールしたい。ギリギリのインディアンに出来る限りのことをして走れるようにしてあげたい。そんな気持ちでいつも通り作業を始める木村氏とN美氏。

オイル・ラインをはんだづけするN美氏。昨日買ったはんだが大活躍。

california here we come...

the van, niimie and i drove through oregon and got into california and then finally hit the pacific ocean while shinya was riding the indian, hoping for them to come back safely.

木村氏とインディアンが過酷な長距離を走っている間、チャボバン隊は（こっちも同じ距離を走るのですが）先にオレゴンを抜けカリフォルニア入り。そしてついに太平洋に出た。ここから南下して明後日にはサンフラン。今は木村氏とインディアンの無事を祈るばかり。

niimie flew across the pacific ocean　then drove all the way to the east coast and rode back to the west. i wonder what feelings might he be experiencing?

海を越えて西海岸まで飛び、今度は東海岸までチャボバンに揺られ、1915年のインディアンで再び西海岸まで戻って来たN美氏は、目の前に広がる太平洋を見ながらいったい何を思っているのだろう。様々な経験を得て心温かい人々に出会い、きっと一回りも二回りも大きくなった気がする。ま、N美氏のことだから、晩ご飯何食べようか考えているだけかもしれないけどネ。

and shinya made it in time!! he wasn't smiling because not only he was exhausted but also he knew that the indian was past the bone. it had already exceeded the limit. we all felt really sorry for her.

そして・・・まさかの木村氏、時間内にゴール！とは言え浮かない顔をしているのは、相当に過酷だったからでもあるけれど、それよりもインディアンが限界を超えているのを実感したから。もうギリギリ。

we could hear the indian's heart crying and it made us really sad.

私達にはインディアンの悲鳴が聞こえている。だからゆったり自分のペースで走らせてあげられないのがとてもつらい。

now what are we going to do?

since all the support crews had to leave before the riders today, i only have those before shots. it would be 280 miles ride which will be really tough for both the indian and shinya. go shinya go!

本日はルートの関係でサポート・クルーはライダーよりも先に出発しなくてはならなくて、出発前の写真しかありません。280マイル（448㎞）・・・ちょっと今のインディアンにも木村氏にとっても厳しい長丁場になりますが、いよいよカリフォルニア入りです。ゴーゴー木村氏！！

まずは強力なはんだを入手。

the oil line came off from the oil tank and oil came out from the tank in torrents when niimie was riding today. photographer Michael Lichter was happened to be at the scene taking photos of niimie and hand-signaled him to stop. if Michael wasn't there, niimie would never know and the engine may seized. niimie gave a temporary treatment in a calm manner and made it happen to crossed the finish line today.

本日N美氏が走行中、オイルラインがオイルタンクからもげ取れて、オイルが滝のように流れ出ていたそうです。走行中のN美氏が気が付くはずもなく、偶然側で写真を撮っていたフォトグラファーのマイケル・リクターが気づいて手信号で止まるようにN美氏に伝えてくれたそうです。驚いたN美氏はその場で止まり、「あー#80は今日もダメだったな」という周囲の諦めモードなどに惑わされず、落ち着いて応急処置をして再びルートに戻りゴール。マイケル・リクターが教えてくれなければエンジンがダメになってしまっていたでしょう。そして、ちょっとやそっとの事では動じなくなっているN美氏の冷静な判断と処置が今日のゴールを生んだのです。ミラクルなN美氏。
