spice of life...

on the way to the dry lake for the land speed race day 2, the van started to make weird noise all of a sudden. it sounded more like something came loose than mechanical problem. so we stopped and checked.

レース二日目、再びエルミラージに向かう途中、突然チャボバンから激しくカラコロカラコロと音が鳴り出したので停まる。何かが「壊れた」というよりも「外れ」てどこかに当たって音を出している感じ。

it was the engine oil filler neck that came off. the bracket was broken. so, shinya just stuffed one of his cotton gloves in to the the filler for now and decided to fix it later.

やっぱりエンジンオイルのフィラーネックのブラケットが折れて、ネックがごっそりもげていた。取りあえず開いた口に軍手を詰め込み応急処置。レースが終わったら直すことにしよう。

ok, we got to the lakebed and the first run of the second day. 104 mph...stone me!

さて、無事にレークベッドにたどり着き、二日目の1走目・・・104マイル！がび～～～ん。

がび～んな気持ちでピットに戻る途中にこんなのが・・・

shinya had changed the front drive sprocket to smaller one last night to go faster but since it didn't go faster, he had to put it back to the one he had yesterday.

昨晩、守りに入らずフロント・ドライブ・スプロケットを小さくした木村氏。しかし、いきなりのスピードダウンで元に戻すことに。

and he's still smiling :) it was very cold outside so he worked in the van.

ガックリするよりも照れ笑いな木村氏。　寒いのでチャボバンの中で作業。

 

 it was sunny and clear but the temperature was really low.

太陽は燦々と照っているのに、気温は手がかじかむ低さ。

ok, the second run. our clubmate K was in front of us. he had been absent from the race for a while but he's back!!

さてさて、2走目です。前に並んでいるのは同じカークラブのK。しばらくレースを休んでいたのに、やっぱり辞められないぜ！と久々のカムバック。

and behind us was also a clubmate D with his knuckle. he has been running in a different classes and has some records. his wife just broke the record on her indian yesterday after 6 years of trying.

我々の後ろも同じくクラブメイトのDとナックル。私達とは違うクラス。インディアンでレースしているDの奥さんが、昨日6年目にして遂に既存のレコードを破ったので、今日は自分がレコードを破る！と気合い満タン。

 on the return road

104mph again! shinya found that the fuel pump was broken. shinya rebuilt it and it performed perfectly yesterday but...no wonder. so it wasn't the sprocket after all. oh well, next year get a better fuel pump and try again.

結果は再び104マイル。オーバーホールして昨日はバッチリだったフューエル・ポンプが再び壊れていた！それでさっきも伸びなかったんだ。来シーズンはもっと良いポンプ付けてさっきのスプロケでもう一度試したいなあ。ま、こんな感じで一進一退を存分に楽しんでおります。

by the way, the guy who's holding the aluminum con-rod looks very familiar. the con-rod was made by 91 years old B on the left. bob nichols racing hmmm i'm positive that i've met this beard guy somewhere...

ところで、ゴール脇まで来てくれたこの二人。右のアルミ製コンロッドを持っている髭の人、すっごく見たことある気がするんだけど・・・ちなみに左の91歳のおじいちゃんBがアルミ製のコンロッドを作っています。髭の人がおじいちゃんに、この二人はもう一人の友達とキャノンボールに出ていたんだよ、などと説明している。ってことは髭は私達のことを知っているのか？誰なんだ、髭よ！

oh! the beard guy is BJ! he rode his 1927 harley-davidson in the cannonball. he's the #53! he said he still has not gone home yet since the grand finish @@ wow

あ！思い出した！髭は1927年式のハーレーでキャノンボールに出ていたBJだ！♯53だよ！今回のキャノンボールは人数が多かったので、全員の顔と名前をいまいち把握できないまま終わってしまったのですが・・・髭なんて呼んじゃってごめんよ、BJ!　彼はサンフランでゴールしてからいまだに家に帰ってないんだって。どんだけ彷徨ってるの？これからヴァージニア州へ行って、オハイオ州に戻るって言ってたけど。とにかく再会出来て嬉しかった！

shinya washing the spike. couldn't go faster today but we somehow felt great! took 5 years to get 123mph from 107mph, but very close to our immediate target of 125mph(200km). now the existing class record of 128mph at bonneville is within range. can't wait for the next season!

戻ってスパイクを洗う木村氏。今日は昨日より速くは走れなかったけど、なぜだかとっても清々しい気分。5年目にしてやっと123マイル超え出来たし、当面の目標だった125マイル（200キロ）は目の前だし、ボンネビルに残されている既存の記録128マイルというのも少し見えてきたし、素晴らしいレースシーズンでした。スパイクおつかれさま！そして来年もこんな感じでのんびりとレースを楽しんでいきたいとおもいます。
