我々には珍しく一日前にエルミラージに出向き、車検を済ませる。

because we had "starting line setup" duty.

なぜならスタート・ラインの設置当番だから。

land speed racing at El Mirage is composed of all racers and supporters efforts. it's a part of the race.

こうやってエルミラージでの最高速レースは、レーサー達やサポーター達が交代で係りを担当して支えている。これもレースのうち。

when we came back to Azusa, confused Sam-san and Wata were waiting for us.

Sam-san bought his own trailer this year to haul his racer to Bonneville (he rented a trailer last year). the used trailer he found on C-list needed some modification to fit his Miata and so he has been working on it at Wata's workshop.

アズサに戻ると悩めるSムOカモト氏とWタナベ氏が待っていた。

ミアータをLAからボンネビルに運ぶため、昨年はトレーラーをレンタルしたSム氏。今年は個人売買でミアータが載る大きさで最小サイズのマイ・トレーラーを入手。多少の手直しが必要だというのでここ数日間アズサで作業していたという訳。

Wata wanted to take his 240Z to El Mirage tomorrow to get it pre-inspected for SpeedWeek. he has arranged to borrow a trailer from his friend before Bonneville but it's not here yet. 

Wタナベ氏はボンネビルに引っ張っていくトレーラーは何とか知り合いの方に借りることが出来そう。ただ、明日のエルミラージにZを持って行ってザックリでも事前車検を受けておきたいらしいけれど、まだトレーラーは手元にはない状態。

Sam-san's Miata and Wata's Datsun are similar in size. so their plan was to haul the Datsun on Sam-san's trailer to El Mirage tomorrow so that Sam-san could test his trailer and Wata could take his machine to the dry lake.

そこで、ミアータとZは大体同じような大きさだし、明日試しにSム氏のトレーラーでWタナベ氏のZを運んでみようというのが最初の計画だったらしい。

however, the plan ended up in smoke... was Datsun bigger than Miata? nope. the trailer was too small. it was supposed to be a 10 x 10 but was actually a 8 x 8... guess someone didn't measure it　right. but i'm sure Sam-san will come up with an alternative solution. 27 days until SpeedWeek 2017.

しかしながらこの計画はおじゃんに。トレーラーにZが載らなかったらしい。ミアータよりZの方が大きいからだって？ノンノン。10フィートｘ10フィートだといって売りに出ていたトレーラーは実際計ると8フィートｘ 8フィートだったんだって。買う前に計れって？そんなつれない事は言いっこなし。明日のエルミラージは諦めてボンネビルまでに何か改造策を練ることに。なんだかやること山積みだけども、スピードウィークまであと27日・・・もあるから大丈夫きっと。

has lots of things to do today but shinya received research materials(valves) for the 1915 Indian and couldn't help getting lost in them. oh well.

研究用のヴァルヴが届いてしまって、1915年インディアンのことに夢中になる木村氏。今日はさ、色々やることあるんだけどなあ。ま、仕方あるまい。

乾湖に戻ってレース2日目。

SDRC teammate with his SR/XT racer. he usually doesn't bring any support crew and races alone. how cool is that!

サンディエゴ・ロードスター・クラブのチームメイトと、彼のレースマシン(SR500/XT500)。基本いつもサポートクルーなしで一人でレースしている。かっこいい。

our good friend Miguel Galluzzi and his son T was here to check out the land speed racing.

友人のモーターサイクル・デザイナー（ドゥカティ・モンスターのデザイナー）、ガルッツィ氏とご子息のTがランド・スピードを見学に来ていた。

レコード保持者のＲはレコード更新に挑戦。

finally it's shinya's turn. however, the throttle cable got cut and he had to go off the course... oh, well. just fix it and go for another pass.

そして、やっと順番が来た！しかしながら、早々にスロットル・ケーブルが切れてコースアウト。残念。よし、直してあともう一本に賭けるぞ！

when shinya finished repairing the cable, there was an announcement from the tower saying they were going to close the course after the first round due to the rough course condition. so no more run for shinya. BUMMER!!! but that's the way races are. (even so, i've been watching him preparing and just saw him fixing the cable in the boiling van, couldn't hold back my tears...) shinya said he will be more prepared for the next month ;P

ちょうど木村氏がケーブルを直し終わって次の1走に気合いを入れている頃、タワーからお知らせの放送が。コースのコンディションがあまりにも悪いため全員が1走終わったら本日はコースを閉める、とのこと。つまり、終了・・・がびーん😒　でも、レースってこういうこと。自分の準備不足だから仕方がない、と木村氏。（筆者は木村氏がギリギリまで準備している姿もさっき汗だくでケーブルの修理をしていた姿も見ているので、涙が出てしまった）よし、また来月！

day 1 on the lake bed..

 good morning from the lake bed!

乾湖で迎える美しい朝。

this will be Stacie B. London's first land speed racing.

友達のSBLちゃん、初のランド・スピード・レースに挑戦。

and it's her racer, 1967 Aermacchi 250 Sprint.

そして、SBLちゃんのレーサーは1967年のアエルマッキ250スプリント。

ドライバーズ・ミーティング。

at motorcycle tech. we need to renew our helmets every 10 years. shinya started to participate in land speed racing in 2007, so it was time to get a new helmet. (it's a bit sad to say goodbye to the helmet that we spent 10 years on the dry lake and salt flats together...) luckily, Bell gave shinya a brand new SNELL approved racing helmet. it means a lot for a private racer like us. thank you, Bell for your support.

オートバイのテック（車検場）にて。思えば2007年からランド・スピード・レースに参加し始め、今シーズンで11年目に突入。10年でヘルメットを新しくしなくてはならないので探していたら、（10年使った思い入れのあるヘルメットが使えなくなるのはとても残念。まだ新品同様に綺麗だし・・・）BELLがレース用にプレゼントしてくれた。こうやってプライベート・レーサー達のこともサポートしてくれるなんて粋だなあ。ありがとう、BELL！

ゴール直後。思い通りの走りは出なかったし手応えもなかったらしいけど、やっぱりこの笑顔。

さて、気持ちを切り替えて2走目の準備。

had many spins due to the rough course condition and had so many participants because this was the season opening, all racers were able to run only one pass and time was up. 

コースのコンディションが悪すぎてスピンが続出、開幕戦なので参加車両も多かったため、全員１走したところで時間切れ。２走目は明日に持ち越しに・・・
