what's one thing you never get tired of doing?

the SR 40th anniversary project. working on the seat section.

shinya was concentrating on this in the straightforward manner all day today.

think something new in the head and bring it into shape by hands. "that's what i'm good at and that's what i want to do," shinya often tells me.  " i don't want to accomplish anything else or anything more. i can enjoy other things because i do this." he couldn't be happier if he could continue doing what he's doing now and could ride motorcycles he loves. i think that is one hell of a fantastic life.

purple heart...

Sepia. just remembered that it ended with a crack in the oil tank at SpeedWeek. really the course was rough. now shinya is going to fix that.

the best and tough part of land speed racing is we race in the middle of Mother Nature, not on a man-made track. every year, the salt and over all course conditions are different. sometimes we had powder salt and flat course and another times, pretty wet and heavy salt and rough course or even worth. but i think that's why it hold our spellbound. when we stand on the salt and see the rising sun and sunset, moon and starry night, we realize just how insignificant we are and still we are racing for the speed 😺

so, i think this is it...

at farewell dinner with our favorite couple, Susan and Paul, and fellow Cannonballer Buck Carson #3 :)

watching the photo slideshow taken by the one and only Michael Lichter.

wake up, shinya! you are on the big screen!

the one and only winner, #49 1912 Henderson, Frank Westfall!

Frank and we share all the memories both good and not so good from the very first Cannonball to this Race Of The Century. we are so happy that he won this one. well, everybody who participated in the race are winners and we were not competing with each other but because we were in the race we know how hard it was for older motorcycles with less transmission and older riders to accomplish this kind of endurance race. so we all respect each other enormously and we all glorify of Frank's effort. congrats, Frank! congrats to all fellow Cannonballers!

also shinya and Niimie said that they were very lucky to be able to know that they still have more to learn by spending 16 days with those skilled/experienced antique motorcycle maniacs and gearheads. the great thing about the Motorcycle Cannonball for us is that it always teach us that how well you can ride and manage an antique motorcycle or how well you can fix an antique motorcycle has nothing to do with the person's rank, power, gender, nor nationality. your skill, experience, imagination, and never give up spirit, that's all about it. yes, we are very lucky to see that in person. and it sure adds depth to rest of our lives.

seasonal tradition...

in japan, the new year season continues for the seven days from the new year's day and especially the first three days are considered the most important holidays for the japanese. most of businesses are closed and people spend their time with their family eating special food visiting a shrine or a temple etc.

but here, though we prepared some traditional new year's food, we let the days go past like any other day spending time at the workshop and riding motorcycles. however, this picture, shinya tinkering with a two barrel SU carburetor off of '50s racing car, shows very typical of him during the first three days of the new year. every year he brings his own project (remember his suzuki GS1000?) one year was yoshimura engine, this year SU carb, etc. on the workbench or on the lift and fantasizing about it for a while. this makes me feel that we are in the new year :D

color coding and big tank...

this'll be the biggest and heaviest gas tank that shinya has ever made :)

and this is the biggest and heaviest gas tank that shinya has ever buffed :D

recently someone told us that motorcycle building is still a blue-collar work. shinya and i looked each other's interrogative faces when we heard that because we've never thought about what category of business we were into. i personally don't care what color our collars are, wait, we don't even wear collared shirts during work ;P anyway, we're doing whatever we love and if it requires hard work or physical work we'll do it! at the end of the day or at the time when we accomplished something and if we could still feel "man, it was hard but we love what we do!" then it's all cool. every work has hard and difficult sides so we just don't blame on the color of the collar.

see in the mind's eye...

shinya said he's got this new idea since he first saw this donor bmw (i don't know what's the "new idea" because, unfortunately, i cannot see it...) but he also told me that he didn't know how to make it happen. now he's struggling.

to me, he seems like always challenging not only inner self but also he's challenging his past work and acquired skills. you may not see it if you just catch a glimpse at some pictures of his "completed" work online or in magazines but it's okay, that's why i started this blog :) well, seeing it in person will be the best way to feel it but at least i can share the process of how he works here. when i see him working on a project and watch the whole process, it gives me warning and encouragement at the same time like "don't be lazy menacing ayu! destroy what you have and create anew!" - he spent hours in the morning and still couldn't figure exactly how to cast his ideas into shape. well, these day happen.

need some watershed :) went out to refill the argon gas bottles.

 you're heading to next door...

then, he finally started to repair my office chair :)

yup, days like this happen :)

the polaroid kidd...

shinya felt funny on the way back from the canyon yesterday and checked the rear shocks on the CB750 this morning...

he took the shocks out and said it looked like someone who didn't know anything about it put these shocks on this CB750. scary :<

passing through downtown los angeles... it was almost 7pm but it was still light. love summer time :)

came to see Mike Brodie's exhibition at M+B.

Brodie who was born in 1985 and has traveled over 50,000 miles(46 states) by train-hopping and hitchhiking from 2004, he took photographs exclusively on polaroid SX70 until the time-zero film was discontinued in 2006. and then from 2006 to 2009 he moved from SX70 to 1980 nikon F3 with 35mm film. this showing is of his 35mm film photographs. "i’ve never really wanted to be an artist. photography has always been a hobby and i think it always will be." mike brodie / the new yorker

we saw some of the girls and boys who were in those photographs at the gallery along with Mike Brodie. they were taking pictures in front of their pictures. not just the photographs but all together atmosphere at the gallery had a great impact on us. shinya and i talked about relentless passage of time, about photography, etcetera, etcetera. you cannot take THIS photograph if you are not at THIS place at THIS moment. live for the moment, in the belief that the moment leads to the future.

 thank you, BT.
