the cannonball prep, day 3...

we found "SuperVan" emblem at the swap meet! actually, SuperVan is one of the ford vans but our van is going to be literally the super van so shinya put it on the front grille of the chevy van :D

スワップミートで「super van 」というエンブレムを見つけた！本来はフォードのバンの種類だけど、このシェヴィヴァンだってこれからスーパーバンになる予定（数百㌦で買ったのに全米横断往復達成など）なので、フロントグリルに装着。スーパーだぜぃ。

since we woke up so early for the swap meet, we took a nap and freshened up to get ready for our second half of the day. just one more thing before they move on to the indian. shinya and niimie wanted to replace the power steering pump on the van.

スワップミートで張り切って早起きしたので、本日の後半戦に備えてしばし休憩&お昼寝。リフレッシュしたところで、あと一つだけシェヴィヴァンの気になるところを改善してからインディアンをやろう、と言いだす木村氏。ステアリング・ポンプの交換・・・

it wasn't so simple as they expected. shinya called up W, the american car specialist, and found out that it required a special tool that shinya didn't have. so they decided to do without it.

思いの他てこずる。こういう時に的確なアドバイスをくれるのがアメ車マスター・スットコWタナベ氏。電話する。どうやら特殊な工具が必要らしい。なんだよ、それ！持っていない工具が必要って言われたってどうしようもないじゃないか、役立たずだな、スットコ。ということで、その必要な工具なしで進むしかなくなってしまった木村氏とN美氏。

it took 4 hours for them to finally finish it and they got exhausted so we called it a day. i thought it was amazing that they finished it without that special tool. they are good at overcoming adversity :)

結局4時間掛けて、でも諦めずにやり遂げたチーム・チャムズ。逆境に強い！でもどっと疲れてしまったので明日に備えて強化合宿3日目を終えることにしましょう。おつかれさまでした！

then yes swap meet in the same breathe :) purely to find some parts for the van. or some tools. maybe materials. oh, and some indian parts if we're lucky.

今回はスワップミートなんて行ってる時間はない。でも、行かないとは言っていない。あくまでもバンのパーツを探しに・・・良いツールや材料になるものがあるかもしれないし、もしかしたらインディアンに使えるものだってあるかもしれない。箱を探しに行く訳じゃないんだし、折角だからとにかく行っておこう。

nice truck! but they weren't looking at the truck. they were looking at a little honda on the bed...niimie wanted it but he had second thought and said to himself "forget about it! i'm here to find van parts or indian parts!"

このトラックもいいんだけど、二人が見ているのは荷台に乗っていたカブ。なぜかN美氏がどうしよっかなぁ～と迷い出す。おーい、カブはバンにもインディアンにも関係ありませんよ！そして、今回のテーマを思い出し、ダメだダメだと言いながら諦めるN美氏、オトナの対応。

shinya paused before this. then he said "not today, maybe next time." and moved on. wow, he has grown up!

これをガン見する木村氏。しかし思いとどまり、「今日はこれはいらないな」とオトナの対応。

ok, they were done with the van for today and now for the indian...

本日のバンの修繕は終了、暗くなってからはインディアンに集中します。

the special wrench for adjusting timing gear made by niimie :)　those little innovations will be the time saver　and may be the savior during the race.

N美氏作、タイミング・ギア締め緩め用のレンチ。これがあることによって作業がスムーズになるそうです。限られた時間内で修理や整備が必要となるレース時には、こういう工夫が本当に役に立つし時間の節約にもなります。

shinya also got to work on the knuckle for the next land speed race.

木村氏は次のエルミラージに向けてスパイクのエンジンもやらなくっちゃいけません、そんな強化合宿2日目。

not the van again, you may think...

but to us, it's part of the preparation for the cannonball. if we can't make it to new york, we can't even start the race!

って、またバンかよっ！と思われるでしょうけど・・・バナナはお菓子に含まれないかもしれませんが、バンの修繕はキャノンボールの準備に含まれます。インディアンが準備万端でも、まずはスタート地点にたどり着けなければレースに参加することさえもできませんもの。

yup yup, we went back to the wrecking yard again to get some small parts like better seat belts and all.

懲りもせず解体屋へ行き、またまた必要な部品を少し手に入れました。例えばシートベルトなど。

we want to make more room inside so shinya tries to put the spare tyre outside.

中を少しでも広くするため、スペアタイヤを外に取り付ける木村氏。

and he found that the bolts underneath for the front seats were  loosened.

そうこうしている内にシートのボルトが緩んでいるのに気がついてくれて、下にもぐったり出たりもぐったり。

the cannonball prep, day 1...

yes, niimie is back! he came here from japan to get ready for the cannonball. this was right after he got to our workshop after 12-hour flight, already working on something. :) he said he was going to focus ONLY on the indian this time, not on swap meets nor thrift store / antique mall hopping. :D really, niimie?

291アイツがやって来た！あ、全然29くないや。空港からチャボに直行、で、すぐに作業をし出すN美氏は今回本気。（マジとは読まない）あくまでもインディアンに集中、スワップミートやスリフト巡り、アンティーク・モールをチェッキングというお決まりのN美コースはおあずけなんですって。まさか、ねぇ。そんなこと出来るのかしらねぇ。とにかく、いよいよ本格的にキャノンボールの強化合宿開始です。

well, since today was their first day, they　did the intense fitness training first. actually, they were just walking around the workshop :D i guess it's time to play this song again :D

まずは初日ということで体力作りから・・・といってもウィーキング。またまたBGMはこちらで。これがかかると歩いているのに走っているように見えます。あれ、見えないや、ただの散歩でした。

very special to see 2 guys working at our workshop. it's really neat that multi things can be done at the same time. as many of you already know about niimie but once again, shinya and niimie worked together about 10 years when shinya was in japan so they don't need to explain by words most of the time. they each know what they're doing and what they need to do.

二人同時に作業が出来るっていいですね。昨日今日会った人とでは出来ないことかもしれません。説明しなくても相手が何をしているのか何をしたらよいのか分かっていて、作業がスムーズに流れているのが見ていてもよく分かります。あと、二人とも好きでやっていることだから、変な緊迫した空気がまったくないのがイイ！それにしても、集中力が凄いです。

exciting!!　boy, i'm totally amazed by their excessive power of concentration. the first day ended after 2am　but they enjoy this more than anything because this is what they love to do.

とっても楽しみ！　にしても初日から飛ばしすぎじゃないですか？夜中まで夢中で作業する二人・・・明日へ続く。
