getting some parts from old chevy vans in the wrecking yard...

クルマの墓場、解体屋で必要なバンのパーツを自分で解体中の木村氏。（良い子の皆は解体屋で写真撮っちゃダメだyo）

so many cars, vans, and trucks　that were once owned by human beings are here waiting. still trying to help other human beings anyway possible. every time we come here, we realize how selfish we are and how easily we throw things away that are still usable.

それぞれ何らかの事情で走れなくなったクルマやバンがずらーっと並んでいるここに来るといつも思う。使える部品がこんなに沢山残っているのに、どうして次から次へと新品を求める必要があるのだろう。他のクルマにつければそのクルマがまた生き返るというのに。散々役目を果たして、それでも最後の最後まで誰かの役に立とうとここで待っている不動車の姿はとても心に染み入るし、気に入って手に入れたクルマを手を掛けてずっと大切にしていきたい、と改めて思わせてくれる。40万マイル以上（64万キロ以上）走っているバンもあった！地球何週でもできちゃう。

そして、木村氏の執拗なまでの検閲が新・シェヴィヴァンに入ります。世間では月曜日が祭日のこの週末、ヴァンヴァン漬け決定な予感・・・

overall, the van is mechanically in great condition. a super cheap van with a good engine is GOLDEN!

ここからって時に帰国したWタナべ氏にイラッとくるでしょ、くるよね。だからシェヴィヴァンはチャボバンにして、背高ノッポの食パンフォードバンをWタナベ氏のヴァンにいたします。中に住めるし2倍嬉しい。ディーゼル積めば燃費も良くなるよ、きっと。広くていいねー。

shinya found this one for the same price as the gas money we had to spend for the two round trips to and from el mirage last weekend. the reason of the bargain was that the van owner couldn't open the hood. after 15 minutes test ride, shinya told him that he wanted to check at least oil and water because we were gonna drive 90 miles back. the van owner tried but couldn't open it. he said he could brake it by crowbar but we said no. then the van owner offered us half the price because he really had to get rid of this. overall it was a great van with 350/4spd so we took it.

こうなったらシェヴィー・ヴァンも試すぞ。先週末２回のエルミラージ往復で新・チャボバンに費やしたガソリン代と同じ値段で手に入っちゃったという驚愕の事実。そう言えばWタナベ氏に探すように頼まれてたっけ。はい、探したよ、しばらく貸しといてね。何でそんなにバーゲンだったのかと言うと、ボンネットが開かなかったから。テストドライブ後なかなか調子も良かったので売主の人に前見せて、と言ったら開かない。物凄く焦って１０分位ガチャガチャやってたけどダメで、バールでこじ開けようか？と言い出したので断った。2時間くらいかけて帰らなくちゃいけないから、せめて水とオイルくらいはチェックしないとなあ、と言ったら、絶対に水温は大丈夫だから、半分にまけるから、お願いだから乗ってって、と言われたので承諾。だって本当にエンジンの調子良かったんだもん。しかも350の4速。

on the way back, i was driving the pretty powerful and smooth cheby van, shinya was driving his cortina. the steering got so heavy so i got off the freeway to add some power steering fluid. oh, that's right, the hood won't open. but of course shinya won't shelve it.

帰り、私がバンを木村氏は乗ってきたコルチーナを運転。途中からハンドルが重ステになってしまったのでパワステ液を足そうと思ってフリーウェイを降りる。あ、そうだった！ボンネットが開かないんだった。ま、もちろん木村氏がそんなことで諦めるはずもなく、ねばぁぎぶあっぷの精神でガチャガチャ。

and voila!　added the fluid and came back with no problem. this van supposed to be W's but we may borrow it for the coast to coast cannonball in september. :D

開いた！最後は運転席から手を伸ばしてギリギリの体勢で開けた。恐るべし、木村氏。液足して、無事帰還。このスットコWタナベ氏のバンで大陸横断なるのか？！屋根低いけど。

最後まで自らの運転で空港に向かうWタナベ氏。車内で究極のスットコを放出したWタナベ氏に素で呆れてしまった木村氏。きっとWタナベ氏はまったく気が付いていないと思うけど・・・

today is W's last day in the US and he chose to work on the duster.

アメリカ滞在最終日のWタナベ氏は、ダスターを色々改善してくれるようです。なんだか「オレのダスター直して帰るからさ」的な流れ。ワイルドですなあ。

in this neighborhood, shinya is called aluminum master. our neighbors carry in any troubled aluminum from small piece of hinges, bicycle frame, screen door to land rover fender like this one...shinya takes them as much as time allows. it seems like a part of his hobby now :D

「アルミのことならシンヤに任せろ」とこの界隈のメッヒコ・コミュニティでは通達が出ているらしい。ヘイ、アルミ・マスター！などと道端で叫ばれることもある木村氏。小さなヒンジから自転車のフレームに網戸、大きなものならレッカー車の枠など、ご近所から次々と運び込まれてくる。時間が許す限りアルミ溶接を引き受ける木村氏、もう趣味の一環らしい。今回は常連さん、お隣の板金屋からのご依頼、ランド・ローバーのフェンダー。アルミ製だなんて知らなかった。

in return, they're gonna fix the dent on our van plus they gave us a unique bottle of tequila! sometimes they give us fruits, sometimes fish and giant clams. they're willing to help us move heavy machinery and receive packages for us when we're away. we enjoy this wonderful way of life and our neighbors.  :)

お返しにこのテキーラをくれた。それとチャボバンの内側にめり込んでいるリア・フェンダーを直してくれるんだって。時にフルーツ、釣ったばかりのお魚や巨大アサリをくれたりもするし、重い機械を運ぶのを快く手伝ってくれたり、留守中に届いた荷物を預かってくれたり。明るいメッヒコ人達との物々交換というのは楽しいものです。結局お金なんていらないよね、こうやって持ちつ持たれつそれぞれが出来ることを交換していけば。ま、アルミを溶接し続けなくちゃならないのは木村氏ってことになっちゃうけど・・・

さあ、二日目の第1本目。昨晩の天才Wタナベ氏の手削り、スーパーナベジェットの成果はいかに？パラシュート付いてないけど、止まれるかな？　・・・結果は107.99マイル・・・微妙過ぎて、何も言えません。

2本目は絞ってみました。で、94.43マイル。

上が広々としているので着替えもラクラクな新・チャボバン。だけど・・・燃費はノンノン。

ok, the round 3, they put the jet back to same as the first day/ first run. 

さて、3本目。今回のベストだった初日の1本目のセッティングに戻してみる。

W's long time dream is to build his own car and race here. he's rehearsing now for the day of his debut. it seems as that day is not so far off.

Wタナベ氏の夢は自分の手でレースカーを作って、ここドライレークでレースすること。今回はちょっとした予行練習というか、シュミレーションというか。早くスットコドッコイを卒業して、夢がかなうといいんだけどねえ・・・

the third round, 104.90mph. oh, well. the engine was very sound and stable, so it was a good season-opening for us :) above all, we all had a super fun weekend!! and our challenge slowly continues...

そして3本目、104.90マイル。残念！エンジンの調子も良いし何となくまとまってきたそうなので、最高のシーズン開幕、と言うことにしましょう。何はさておき、めちゃくちゃドキドキして楽しい週末を過ごせたってことが一番！まだまだの～んびりチャレンジは続きます。
